The ISP is proud to bring Novel Engineering learning sessions to district and school teams across the St. Louis region. These three-hour, experiential learning sessions are provided by Tufts-Certified trainers. ISP-led sessions are fee-for-service offerings.

Inspired by kids and grounded in research, Novel Engineering is an innovative integration of engineering in elementary and middle school classrooms with a literary focus.

Novel Engineering is a concept pioneered by the School of Engineering Center for Education and Outreach at Tufts University.

Through the use of rich literature already used in your classrooms, literacy skills are practiced and reinforced while participating in an engaging STEM challenge.

Novel Engineering walks educators through the Novel Engineering arc through an immersive experience where the teacher is both student and teacher. A variety of strategies are used to address the needs of diverse learners.

Why Novel Engineering?

  • Cross-curricular connections
  • Aligned with NGSS, MLE, and Common Core
  • Enhances reading comprehension

  • Provides opportunities for realistic engineering design
  • Engages and supports all learners

“The Novel Engineering Day went really well. It was cool to see students who are quiet in class take charge and lead a team to build a sled. I found out some of my quieter kids are talented when planning and building things while others were not and it was surprising. Overall the kids had a great time and everyone built sleds that held up to our snow hill.”
