At the beginning of each school year, middle school math teacher Monica Amos knows her primary job is to help students build confidence in their abilities to solve problems.

“The first six weeks, I’m very intentional about getting to know my students and their parents,” says Amos. “My question for parents is this: What can I know that will benefit your child? All students want to be seen, and once they feel seen, the math comes so much easier.”

Back when she was a student herself, she didn’t see herself as a math person or a teacher, but today she can’t imagine doing anything else.
